Discovering 'U' camps feature exciting, creative programs for youth to explore more about how to express themselves. Whether through artistic endeavors or personal development topics, these challenging and interactive sessions can open up a whole new world. In addition to the featured two to three hours of daily instruction, participants will be playing sports or games, swimming, rock climbing, and exploring the many facets of the University of Minnesota, resulting in a great, well-rounded experience.

Art and Yoga
Join us in this exceptional camp that combines art and yoga. Start your day with yoga poses and games as you learn breathing and mindfulness techniques; and then unleash your creativity as you drawn, paint, collage, sculpt and more!

Do you love art? In this amazing camp, we'll have a blast experimenting with all sorts of art materials from watercolors, to pastels, clay, canvas, paper mache and more! We'll draw, paint, sculpt and collage art projects to take home. From landscapes to dogs and even ice cream, you'll surely have a blast at this camp!

Ignite your passion for blacksmithing and get an introduction to the endless ways of expressing yourself by shaping iron with fire and hammer. You'll learn shop safety and gain basic knowledge of the dynamics of forging by making some cool (hot!) stuff. Please note that bladesmithing or swordsmithing, which are advanced forging techniques, are not covered in this class. Wear leather work boots or shoes and all cotton clothing with long sleeves. All other safety equipment is provided. An additional waiver for Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center is required with registration.
You are sure to be laughing all summer long as you explore the fun, artistic world of cartooning with our friends from Young Rembrandts! Funny expressions and hilarious storylines are just a few pieces you will create. Have fun with silly and interesting stories or jokes and learn how to draw action, movement, sounds and expressions of mood.
Here’s your chance to run away with the circus for a week! This camp is designed to introduce children to the excitement of circus arts in a fun, safe, supportive, and challenging environment. Participants will use teamwork and build trust as they learn how to do basic body balancing movements that increase their flexibility and strength, as well as tricks on the Lyra and static trapeze. Campers are given the opportunity to discover their unique sense of creative expression, and to gain a better understanding of their own body movements and capabilities.
Become a Cinematographer with this perfect combination of clay building and digital animation. Working in small teams, campers begin by creating a story and the characters, sets, and props by hand. Then they put it all together in the production process while animating, recording, downloading and editing a movie. An exciting way to discover how your favorite animated movies really come to life!
Comic Book Creation 101
JDo you love comic books? Ever thought of creating one yourself? Comic Book Creation 101 will give you the tools you need to get started! From writing dialogue to inking and coloring, you'll learn the step by step process of creating comic books through idea generation and story development, script writing, layout and illustration. By weeks end, you'll be leaving with a finished short comiv, or the start to a much larger story, it's all up to you!
Welcome to Design Lab, where your imagination leads the way! This camp challenges you to design and build products for real world problems using a huge range of materials. You'll explore the entire process of product design, from the first steps of the drawing board to the finger-crossing test run. Make sure you bring and open mind, because the challenges you face here will push your creative skills to the limits!
Spend the week drawing household pets, cartoon animals, and horses. Learn how to personify ordinary animals, transforming them into fully-realized cartoon characters! Challenge yourself as you draw horses or all shapes, sizes and styles. Then, use diffrent media to create colorful compostions which will help you stengthen your coloring skills.
Drop It, Roll It, Whack It, Move It
Have you ever thought about how many other ways you can crack an egg, turn off the lights, or brush your teeth? There is always more than one way to solve a problem, and that’s just what this camp is about! Join us as we use scraps, stuff, things, string, and anything else we can find to invent a big “machine” that solves a small problem, in the style of Rube Goldberg--the more over the top, the better! Get your creativity and thinking caps on, this camp is like no other!
Flamework Immersion: Make Glass Beads!
Take the bead making challenge. This is a unique opportunity to work with a mounted torch and Italian soft glass. All of the beginner techniques including safety protocol, tool and equipment use, shaping and decoration will be practiced daily. Campers must wear long pants made of natural fibers for the instructional time. Safety goggles and other equipment provided. An additional waiver form for the Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center is required.
Glow and Go!
Glow in the dark, glitter, and metalliz colors, along with other materials combined, make this camp amazing! Join us and have a blast as we create amazing art that glows in the dark, as well as awesome projects with a spark. We'll make 3D fireflies that light up, glow in the dark owls, and glittery fireworks among many other fun projects. This camp will surely light up your creativity!
Test the limits to your imagination and design ideas through exploration of physical form. Discover how nature gives cues about structural endurance by observing items such as nests, spider webs, or the shell of an egg. Film and photograph your journey to share with family and friends, all while trying your skill at building in this exciting class where you will design and build large-scale architectural sculptures in the style of Andy Goldsworthy! Join us, as we turn cardboard and scrap into priceless pieces of art that demand attention, catch the light, and expand our imaginations about enclosure.
Intro to Improv!
This camp will introduce you to the art of improvisational theater. Instructors from the Brave New Workshop Student Union will bring you through this art form that promotes teamwork, confidence, and creativity to build on the set of skills which will make you a better speaker and leader. Whether you tend to be the one who jumps into the thick of things, or hangs back along the wall, this camp is great for all! No previous experience is required.
Bring out the leader within you! Leadership can take on many different styles. Find your style and build your skills with Outward Bound’s fun and experiential activities. Everyone can participate in this camp. Those that feel they are natural born leaders—come and test your stuff. LEGO® Film School
Let’s create and make fantastic LEGO® movies! Campers will work in teams to create a short LEGO® Movie using Lego characters, sets, backgrounds and various props. Use your imagination & creativity to develop your Lego story while learning all of the technical details; including using a digital movie camera, filming scenes, stop-motion animation, downloading footage to the computer, digital editing and adding finishing special effects and transitions to the movie. In this exciting hands-on learning class, our instructors will take campers through the entire digital filmmaking steps from start to finish.

Outdoor Adventure Photography
Jump in a canoe at Calhoun and hike near Minnehaha Falls. Look at the world in a whole new way, as your search for the best shot to showcase at week's end! We will work within your limitations, as your own photography equipment is required for this camp (which could range from a smartphone to a DSLR camera depending on what you have!)
Oxy-Aceltylene Found Object Sculpture
Discover scrap metal and learn to make sculptural projects from it using oxy-acetylene welding and metal fabrication techniques. This beginning-level camp will cover shop safety, cutting, welding and brazing processes using an oxy-acetylene torch. Learn the limitations and benefits of these processes through the design and fabrication of your own work of art! An additional waiver for Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center is required with registration, and campers must wear long pants and long sleeves, made of natural fibers, and work boots or shoes, for instructional time. Safety goggles and other equipment provided.
Passport to Pastels
Draw a colorful goldfish as Henri Matissse, create Van Gogh's famous Starry Night complete with swirls throughout the sky, and produce a powerful still life full of robust color as Paul Cezanne often did in his paintings. Each day will challenge you with the pastel media; but in the end you will be a Master yourself! These will definitely be frame worthy works of art. No experience necessary; and please bring an old shirt or smock to class each day.
Playwrights and Performance
What do William Shakespeare, George Bernard Shaw and Tennessee Williams all have in common? They were all famous playwrights! Join us as we take a look at all the elements needed to write and perform a play in this fun and exciting camp. Learn how a playwright uses directions and dialogue to create a story. Work in small groups to build plot, scenes and develop characters. A performance on Friday will be the culmination of all your hard work to showcase your creativity!
Pokemon: The Gathering
Which starter will you choose? Run into the world of Pokemon and learn about the vast universe that Ash and his friends have traveled through for nearly two decades. Then, collect your mana and deploy your creatures as you learn to play Magic the Gathering (or learn to play it better), all while developing social, critical and creative thinking skills! In this camp, you will spend the week honing your mathematical strategy and reading skills, while expanding your vocabulary and making new friends as you travel through the worlds of Pokemon and Magic the Gathering! No previous experience needed, and you'll head home with your very own starter decks at the end of the week.
Sculptural Metal Casting Fundamentals
Have you ever wondered what happens when you heat metal until it looks like lava? Discover the amazing world of cast metal sculpture in this beginner's course! In this class we will learn shop safety and pour metal each day, creating one-of-a-kind pieces from different molding and pouring techniques. We will work with lead-free pewter, molten aluminum, and bronze. You can expect to experiment with modern and traditional methods while gaining experience in the ancient art of metal-casting! An additional waiver for Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center is required with registration, and campers must wear long pants and long sleeves, made of natural fibers, and work boots or shoes for instructional time. Awareness, avoidance, and physical techniques are all key features of self-defense training. This camp for both girls and boys will focus on concepts and techniques that are practical, simple and applicable to today’s world. Discussion on potential threats and negative situations will be included along with tips for avoiding danger and physical practice for self-protection. Our experienced instructor will facilitate the building of a safe, fun learning environment in this invaluable camp!
Wizards of YP
Learning magic can also mean learning to tell good stories, be creative, gain confidence, and entertain while having as much fun as your audience. Spend the week learning from a real magician! Uncover the secrets of misdirection while creating mystery in your performance as you prepare to amaze your friends and families! In this camp you get to do much more than just learn some tricks; you get to be a magician.
